22nd July 2014 - During a themed inspection looking at Offender Healthcare pdf icon

We carried out this inspection in partnership with Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Prisons (HMIP). We spoke with five people who had used the service and asked if they felt staff treated them with dignity and respect. The people we spoke with told us they felt that the staff were polite and respectful. One person said, "They treat you as an individual." Another person told us, "All the Addaction team have been great, really understanding."

The staff we spoke with told us that they were proud of the holistic service they were able to offer to people. One staff member said, “We try to understand the person and factors in their life. This allows us to tailor the support to their needs.”

Where the staff received sufficient notice of a person's release from the prison, appropriate arrangements were in place to plan for their discharge or transfer to community services. For example, staff had contacted a community based service to arrange for one person’s support to transfer upon their release. The system in place to share information with the healthcare provider about prescribed medication was not sufficiently robust. However, a workaround system was in place that enabled information to be shared about what medication was prescribed to different people.

Staff were supported through induction, training, supervision and appraisal. The staff we spoke with told us that they felt very well supported by the provider.

There were effective systems in place to monitor the quality of the service and make improvements where required. People using the service were asked for their opinion about the service.
