30th April 2014 - During an inspection to make sure that the improvements required had been made pdf icon

During our previous inspection of March 2012 we found the provider had not taken reasonable steps to ensure the safeguarding of vulnerable adults. We found there was no policy or procedure in place for safeguarding adults.

We found that all members of staff had received up to date training in safeguarding vulnerable adults and children. Additional scenario based safeguarding training took place during regular staff meetings and this training was recorded in the minutes. We spoke with four members of staff who gave clear details of the steps they would follow if they identified any safeguarding concerns. These steps were also detailed in the safeguarding policy which staff had signed to say they had it read and understood them.

We saw that new building works had been carried out to improve the decontamination facilities at the practice. This accounted for the gap between inspections. New procedures had been introduced to ensure any risks of contamination of sterilised instruments were minimised. All of the staff we spoke with were aware of the procedures.

We found the provider carried out additional infection control training at regular team meetings.

When we visited we spoke with patients about their care. We also telephoned people after our visit to ask their opinion about the care they received.

Everyone said that that they found the clinical and non-clinical staff to be professional and caring. They said that they were treated with respect and given clear information about any treatment they needed. Some people told us their children were given particularly good reassurance at Alresford Dental Care, even those who had initially been anxious about visiting a dentist. They said this was because nervous patients had been given sufficient time and support to relax and feel comfortable.

We were told that treatment plans were discussed with patients, with options, priorities and costs described. Patients also told us that and risks were outlined and they were asked for their medical history.

Patients reported that the clinic appeared clean and that staff wore appropriate personal protective equipment, such as gloves and masks.
