12th June 2014 - During an inspection to make sure that the improvements required had been made pdf icon

A follow up inspection took place on 9 April 2014 which identified that people were not protected from the risk of infection because appropriate guidance had not been followed by the practice. These concerns were judged to have had a minor impact on people who used the service.

The provider was required to submit a plan detailing the action they were taking to ensure compliance with this standard and the date at which they would be compliant. The provider told us in their plan that they would be compliant with this standard by the 14 April 2014.

At this inspection we found that the provider had taken measures to meet the guidance laid out in the Health Technical memorandum 01-05 (HTM 01-05) and had followed the recommendations contained in a Legionella risk assessment which was carried out in October 2013.

A routine inspection took place on 22 November 2013 which identified that people were not protected from the risk of infection because appropriate guidance had not been followed by the practice. These concerns were judged to have had a minor impact on people who used the service.

The provider was required to submit a plan detailing the action they were taking to ensure compliance with this standard and the date at which they would be compliant. The provider told us in their plan that they would be compliant with this standard by the 13 December 2013.

At this inspection we found that the provider had taken measures to meet the requirement to carry out infection control audits but we found that the provider did not follow all the guidance laid out in the Health Technical memorandum 01-05 and had not fully followed the recommendations contained in the Legionella risk assessment which was carried out in October 2013.

We spoke with four patients and a relative who visited the practice on the day of our inspection. One patient said; "I have been coming here for over ten years and have always had fantastic support from the dentist. My whole experiences here have been superb." Another patient said; "The place is always spotless and the staff are so friendly."

We found patients were involved in their care and were made aware of options available for differing treatments. One patient said; "The dentist always tries to save the tooth rather than extract it which is why I come back." We saw staff treated patients with courtesy and respect throughout their treatment.

We found the practice to be clean and hygienic and staff were knowledgeable about control of infection. However, the practice did not carry out regular audits of its decontamination processes.

There was an effective recruitment and selection process in place. This ensured staff were appropriately checked, qualified and skilled to work in the dental practice.

We saw a number of systems in place to monitor the quality of the service provided. The practice manager told us patients had completed a satisfaction survey and the results were positive. One patient's relative said; "I have always been happy with the service my relative and I receive and have never felt the need to suggest any changes to improve it."
