26th September 2013 - During a routine inspection pdf icon

The dental practice had a current contract with the NHS to provide NHS orthodontic treatment. We found there were suitable arrangements for obtaining people’s consent for the care and treatment provided to them. People told us they were always asked for this and their medical history was asked for and updated at each appointment.

We looked at how the people who were using the service were supported to express their views and be involved in making decisions about their care and treatment. This included detailed treatment plans and patient records the options discussed and the reasons for the selection of the treatment delivered. A patient we spoke with told us "I am always happy with the care I get", and "The dentist makes sure I understand what the choices are before he does anything".

People were protected from the risk of infection because appropriate guidance had been followed for example an organised and managed decontamination room. Staff understood how to follow best practice guidance for reducing the risk of cross infection.

Staff were supported to maintain personal professional development and other training. This helped to ensure that people who used the service received safe treatment by a competent staff team.

The practice was well managed with quality of care and treatment being monitored regularly. This helped to ensure that the service was run in the best interests of the people who were using it.
