4th October 2013 - During an inspection to make sure that the improvements required had been made pdf icon

At our last inspection on the 16th April 2013 we found that the provider was not meeting one of the essential standards of quality and safety. The provider sent us an action plan to explain how they would comply with the regulation. We carried out this inspection to check that the action plan had been carried out.

At this inspection we spoke briefly with one patient who was at the service. They told us they were "very happy" with the treatment provided. Otherwise we did not seek the views of patients who used the service but we reviewed the comments in the comment book and looked at completed patient proformas. All the comments about treatment and the staff at the practice we saw were positive. We saw some suggestions had been made and they were under review on the day of the inspection.

We found that at this inspection there was evidence that an adequate quality assurance system was in place and that people's views about the service were sought and taken into account when planning for the service was undertaken.

16th April 2013 - During a routine inspection pdf icon

On the day of the inspection we spoke with two people who used the service. They said that the possible treatment options and costs were fully explained to them. One person said “options were talked through in great detail”. We looked at comments that had been written in the comment book at reception. One said “top class treatment”, another wrote “I like the dentist...... I will recommend them to my friends and family.” Following the inspection, we spoke by phone with two people who used the service. They spoke positively about their care, one commented "I can't say how brilliant they are."

We looked at the surgery records. We saw people had treatment plans which took into account their relevant medical history, set out their treatment needs and explained the costs.

We observed that there were effective systems in place to reduce the risk of the spread of infection. People told us they felt the practice treatment room and waiting area were clean and they had confidence in the care and treatment provided.

We spoke to staff and looked at staff records. We were told that two established staff had left recently and a new dental nurse and receptionist had been appointed. We spoke with the new staff and they told us they were given an induction and that their training needs were being planned for.

We looked at other records and found that there were insufficient mechanisms in place to adequately monitor and review the quality and safety of the service provided.
