27th September 2013 - During an inspection to make sure that the improvements required had been made pdf icon

During our inspection on 08 March 2013 we found that all areas of the premises that we visited were visibly clean. We saw that the provider’s infection control policy did not reflect their actual decontamination process. Decontamination equipment was not calibrated daily to ensure that it was working properly. Also, staff told us that there was only one mop used for all general areas including the toilet and staff kitchen. During this inspection on 27 September 2013, we found that the provider had made the required improvements.

On our inspection on 08 March 2013, we found that two out of four dentists had not had a United Kingdom Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks undertaken. Also, no other staff were found to have had these checks to ensure that they were deemed safe to work with vulnerable adults and children. In the course of this inspection on 27 September 2013, we found that the provider had not made all of the improvements required.

On 08 March 2013 inspection we found that the provider did not have an effective quality monitoring system in place to ensure the safety and well-being of people who used the service. During this inspection on 27 September 2013 we found that the provider had made some but not all of the required improvements in line with Department of Health Guidelines on monitoring decontamination processes in dental practices.

8th March 2013 - During a routine inspection pdf icon

We spoke with three people who used the service (one by telephone). They told us that their dental care options, treatment plans and costs were discussed in full and agreed with them before their treatment commenced.

People said that they were satisfied with the standard and quality of the dental support, care and treatment they had received. One person went on to tell us that Broadway Smart Dental Surgery was, "Very good." Another told us, “I am so happy with them.”

All of the areas of the premises that we visited were visibly clean. However, we found that improvements were needed regarding the checking and quality assurance of the decontamination process, sterilising equipment and dental instruments.

People told us that they had confidence in the competency and skills of staff; this was because they felt staff had been recruited to a good standard. However improvements were needed to ensure that all checks were in place before members of staff were deemed suitable to work with vulnerable people.

During our inspection we could not evidence that any quality assurance systems and monitoring were in place to ensure that people received safe dental care and treatment as no audits had been undertaken during 2012.

Improvements were needed to give people who used the service opportunities to feedback any positive aspects of the service they received and improvements they wished to see implemented.
