22nd May 2013 - During a routine inspection pdf icon

We spoke with four patients who told us the service always sought their consent before providing treatment. In some cases this was given verbally and in others it was given in writing.

People we spoke with told us they had been with the practice for some years and were happy with the treatment they received. One said, “They’re always so nice, they put me at my ease”. We observed two patient consultations with dentists and one with a hygienist. The dentist or hygienist explained to the patient what they were doing at each stage of the process.

There were effective systems in place to reduce the risk and spread of infection. People were cared for in a clean, hygienic environment. Best practice guidance on the sterilisation of instruments was followed and staff were appropriately trained.

We spoke with nine members of staff. We found they received appropriate professional development. Nurses and reception staff were supervised effectively and received annual appraisals. We spoke with four patients, who praised the quality of care and the friendliness of the staff. One said, “My main thing is hygiene and friendliness and both are excellent”.

The provider used patient satisfaction surveys, a suggestions box and verbal feedback to seek the views of people using the service. Improvements were made as a result. Records showed there were effective systems in place to assess and monitor the quality of service that people received.
