7th January 2014 - During a routine inspection pdf icon

We met a person who had attended the practice for 50 years. They told us that the dentist and their father, who preceded them, were the two best dentists they had ever met. The person said they felt the practice had “looked after their teeth well” and had returned as part of ongoing treatment. The person described the receptionist and dental nurse as “lovely” and told us how the receptionist had telephoned them to warn about local flooding earlier that day.

Other people we spoke with made positive comments about the service and told us that the dentist always asked for their consent before commencing treatment.

People’s needs were assessed and treatment was carried out according to their individual treatment plan. Records were maintained and these were audited. Other audits were carried out to monitor the quality of the service provided including gaining the views of people who used the service.

Arrangements were in place to deal with unforeseen emergencies and staff were trained in resuscitation techniques as part of their continuing professional development. Staff told us about other training they completed and said they felt supported.

Due to the practice at Gloucester Street being closed on the day of our visit, we spoke with two people by telephone. Both of the people were due to attend the practice the following day.

One of the people told us they did not like going to the dentist before moving to this practice 20 years ago. They said that treatment was always good because it was painless. They had root canal treatment at their most recent appointment and confirmed there were no problems. The person said they were moving away from the area and had not considered moving to another dental practice. They spoke highly of the cleanliness of the practice and of the friendly reception staff.

Another person told us they had visited for one of their regular checks. They said that the dentist was “always gentle” and discussed treatments, and the cost involved, with them.
