24th April 2013 - During an inspection to make sure that the improvements required had been made pdf icon

When we visited Dentalcare Westbury in January 2013 we found arrangements for cleanliness and infection control needed improvement. We judged this had a minor impact on people. The provider then sent us an action plan outlining how improvements were to be made. We went back on this visit to check if the practice now met the required standard for cleanliness and infection control. We found all the improvements required had been made with a few minor exceptions.

The two surgeries were clean and tidy. Windows, surfaces and equipment was clean and well maintained. The decontamination room had been completely refurbished to a high standard. The standard of cleanliness and cleaning procedures within the surgeries had been addressed. There was still some work to be done on the ventilation of the decontamination room, but all other improvements in this room had been completed. The ventilation work was in hand with a building contractor. Audits of infection control were now done regularly and in line with Department of Health decontamination guidance. Staff had all undertaken refresher training on infection control and decontamination procedures.

We did not speak with people who used the service on this visit. However, at our last visit in January 2013 people told us they were happy with their care and treatment. They said care was "excellent" and "I am quite satisfied." All the people we spoke with told us they would recommend the practice to friends and family.

7th January 2013 - During a routine inspection pdf icon

People we met at the practice were happy with their care and treatment. They said care was "excellent" and "I am quite satisfied." All the people we spoke with told us they would recommend the practice to friends and family. They said they were able to make their own decisions and gave valid consent to any treatment. People said treatment costs were clear. They told us they were given health advice about caring for their teeth and gums.

People were given information about proposed treatment options and were asked for their consent before treatment was provided. When people lacked capacity to make their own decisions the staff knew how to act in people's best interests. Clinical staff were trained and equipped to deal with medical emergencies. They were also trained to recognise and act upon any signs of abuse in children or vulnerable people. People were treated by staff who had been subject to recruitment checks to ensure they were appropriately qualified and safe to work with vulnerable people. Records were fit for purpose, held securely and kept confidential. Records were easily accessible when needed.

We found there were improvements needed to meet guidance for cleanliness and infection prevention and control at the practice.
