We joined Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Prisons (HMIP) on their planned visit to HMP Holme House. We looked at the GP services provided by Gables Medical (Offender Health) ltd. At various points during the week we, HMIP and Ofsted inspectors held discussions with the prisoners.

The headquarters administration staff effectively organised the GP schedule and looked across the full service they provided in the prisons. This ensured the visiting GP had the skills needed to deliver specialist clinics, such as those for people with long-term conditions. At HMP Holme House, two dedicated GPs delivered the majority of sessions. We found that the GP services provided at HMP Holme House operated sufficient sessions with between 27 and 30 sessions (appointments) being offered each week.

The prisoners found that the length they waited to see the GP was acceptable and most were seen within days of putting in the application for an appointment. They told us that the GPs clearly explained to them the reason they received a certain treatment and thoroughly investigated their health needs before prescribing medicines.

We found that all of the new prisoners were seen by the GPs within 24 hours of arrival at the prison.

We found that the GP's had formed good working relationships with the other healthcare organisations. They were well trained and completed thorough clinical reviews, which led to effective care being delivered.
