14th August 2013 - During a routine inspection pdf icon

We spoke with people who use the service and members of staff. We looked at twelve sets of patient records and observed a patient consultation.

The practice gained people's consent appropriately. We noted that when private patients required treatment they had been given a written breakdown of the proposed treatment and the cost of each stage. For children and young people being treated as NHS patients we saw that consent, where required, was obtained from a parent or guardian. This showed us that where people did not have the capacity to consent, the provider acted in accordance with legal requirements.

The practice took steps to ensure the welfare and safety of people who used the practice. One person we spoke with said that the staff would ensure that they were comfortable and that the dentist would stop “…as soon as I put my hand up.”

We saw effective sterilisation procedures, undertaken in a dedicated decontamination room. Staff were able to explain the ways in which they minimised the risk of infection.

There were sufficient, suitably qualified, staff to carry out treatment and care. One person told us that the practice was “…well-organised.” A practice complaints policy was in place. The practice had a system in place for logging formal complaints. We noted that no formal complaints had been logged in the 12 months prior to our inspection.
