10th May 2013 - During a routine inspection pdf icon

This was the second time we had inspected this dental practice. On our first inspection we identified minor concerns with the practice's infection control practices. This inspection was arranged two days in advance. This was in order that we could talk with staff and people using the practice. We spoke with six people that attended the practice, the dentist, the practice manager and dental nurses.

People told us they were satisfied with the service they received. They said the dentist always discussed their treatment and they were provided with the available options. One person told us: "They fully explained everything".

People told us they received care and treatment that met their needs. People were provided with a plan of their treatment that included any costs. Consultations were recorded and medical conditions were taken into account when planning people's care.

Policies and procedures were in place to provide a safe environment. Audits and checks were completed to control the risk of the spread of infections and to maintain a clean environment.

Staff were trained and supported to undertake their role. This meant that staff had the knowledge and skills to provide people with the care and support they needed.

People were asked about their views of the service and where issues were identified these were acted upon. The practice had a complaints procedure and any complaints received were addressed.

We conducted telephone interviews with four people who use the service and spoke with one person during our visit to the service. People told us that they had no concerns about the care and treatment they received. They made some of the following comments:

“I am happy with the treatment they have done. I previously had big problems with my teeth and they sorted it out. I had implants and they have settled down very well.”

“I have had four teeth extracted at this surgery and I have never had an infection. The surgery is one of the cleanest I have seen. They are always sterilising the tools and you can see them doing it.”

The facilities and resources offered at this practice include four surgeries, two of which were currently being used for treatment. There was a full time and a part time dentist, three dental nurses and a trainee dental nurse. The reception entrance and all surgery rooms are on the ground floor which makes the practice accessible to people with mobility restrictions. The registered manager told us that they have access to interpreting services for people whose first language is not English.

During our visit we looked around the premises. We spoke with both dentists, including the registered provider, the registered manager and one dental nurse and looked at records for three people who had visited the surgery recently.

Evidence that we gathered during this review confirmed that people are assessed to decide what dental and oral healthcare needs they may have. Treatments that people may need are discussed with them and are carried out in a satisfactory way.

We found that people receive treatment in an environment which was clean and managed so as to reduce the risk of infections. Improvements to the system for managing infection control will offer further reassurance to people using the service.
