24th February 2014 - During a routine inspection pdf icon

During our visit to Leys Dental Care we met with the dentist who was also the registered manager. We spoke with four patients, with one member of staff and with the agency dental nurse working on the day of our visit.

Patients were able to influence their treatment. A patient we spoke with told us that they had advised the dentist that they wanted to avoid extraction of any of their teeth if at all possible. They said "he [the dentist] has occasionally done a filling at my request but, warned me it (the tooth) may need to be taken out. I've never had to come back".

Patients were treated with regard to their safety. The patients we spoke with told us that the dentist always checked if they were fit and well before commencing treatment. One patient said "he [the dentist] always goes through your medication and all that". The dental records we looked at contained medical history forms that were updated before treatment commenced.

Patients were protected from the risk of infection because current guidance was followed.

Staff were well supported to carry out their roles and responsibilities. We saw that the dentist and receptionist were in close communication throughout our visit.

There were effective quality assurance processes in operation. There was a record of a wide ranging audit that had been completed in November 2013. This covered many aspects of care and safety. For example radiography safety and fair access to care and treatment.
