21st August 2012 - During a routine inspection pdf icon

This inspection was carried out by two inspectors, who visited the service on 21st August 2012. On the day of the visit we spoke with fourteen patients and five members of staff, and checked seven files of the patients. We also saw the facilities and equipment of the service.

All the patients we spoke with were satisfied with their treatment and the service they received at the clinic. They told us staff gave them information about their care and treatment. They said the doctors and nurses explained their medical condition and treatment in a way they understood. Patients told us they felt they were treated with respect and dignity. They told us staff listened to them and answered any questions they had regarding their treatment. We noted some patients, who had communication difficulties, came with their relatives or friends so they could communicate with staff. Patients thought their experience of the clinic was "excellent" and they would recommend it to others.

Patients told us the clinic provided them with hot and cold drinks, and snacks while they were waiting in a room after their treatment. They told us they were given post surgery advice, medication and emergency numbers to contact if they had any problems.

A patient felt the doctors did "miracles" and they were so satisfied with their treatment in one eye that they did not want to miss a second appointment for the treatment of their other eye even though the date was not convenient to them. Another person told us they were so satisfied with their treatment they had decided to make a financial contribution to a charity, so other people would benefit from similar care and treatment which they had enjoyed.

Some patients told us the waiting time could be improved because they often had to wait for about one and half hours. Patients, however, did not feel this was a problem as the treatment they received was "world class".

All the patients we spoke with felt that all parts of the clinic were clean and hygienic. They told us the facilities and environment were in good condition. Patients told us staff maintained good hygiene practices. They said staff wore protective clothing including uniforms and gloves. Patients told us they knew there were hand gels in the corridors for visitors. They said they saw staff washing their hands. Patients felt they were not at risk of infections because the equipment and facilities of the clinic were maintained and always kept clean.
