11th October 2012 - During a routine inspection pdf icon

During our visit on 11 October we spoke with the provider who is the dentist for the practice and the dental nurse.

The majority of the people who used the service provided by the dentist were unable to share their views with us. We spoke to staff at three of the residential homes where the dentist delivered domiciliary dental care. They told us: "It's excellent because we couldn't ask for anything else. Our residents have dementia. She is very mindful. Very patient." "She talks to them putting them at ease. That is why we have her."

For patients who were unable to give consent, the dentist described in detail how they would make "best interests decisions" as to plans of treatment. Care staff confirmed that families and representatives were kept informed of any costs to be incurred. "She will always leave us a quote and depending on who deals with their finances we will confirm it with them. "

Staff at care homes spoke of the support the dentist provided for anyone who was ill and suffering with oral problems. "Anything that interferes with diet and fluids, we call Carolyn and she will advise over the phone or come out."

The dentist provided a service to people in their own bedroom where this was the best and most comfortable option for them.

At the time of our visit the dentist was not able to evidence they had all the equipment necessary to support a patient in a medical emergency.
