1st January 1970 - During a routine inspection pdf icon

We rated Newton House as good because:

  • Newton House was clean and well maintained. Environmental risk assessments were in place and equipment was checked regularly.
  • Systems were in place to monitor and manage patient risks. Assessments were carried out in a timely manner and regularly reviewed. Building ligature risk assessments were in place.
  • Staff displayed a good understanding of their roles and responsibilities in relation to safeguarding. Staff completed training and safeguarding was embedded within practice
  • Staff accessed mandatory and specialist training. Staff were appraised and supervised regularly. This meant that staff were appropriately skilled and supervised for their roles.
  • There was a multidisciplinary approach to care and treatment. Patients were able to access a range of psychological therapies and activities.
  • Patients received a physical health assessment and there was ongoing physical health care.
  • Patients were treated with kindness dignity and respect. They were involved in their care and were able to give feedback on the service they received. There was a patients council which allowed patients to input into service development.
  • There were fortnightly discharge and rehabilitation meetings. Patients were involved in discharge planning.
  • There were governance systems in place to assure the quality of the service. Staff were engaged in audit and there was learning from adverse incidents and complaints.

However:

  • The service had not implemented changes to policy and procedures in line with the Mental Health Act revised Code of Practice This meant that the service did not adhere to the revised Mental Health Act Code of Practice.
  • Not all staff were trained in the revised Code of Practice.
