14th March 2013 - During a routine inspection pdf icon

When we visited this service on 14 March 2013, we looked at the premises and spoke with the practice manager, a dentist, a dental nurse and a trainee dental nurse. They spoke enthusiastically about their work and the patients. We spoke with six people who used the service. They all told us the service was very good and they wanted to continue using this service. One person said, “I have been going there for a couple of years now, they are fantastic, they put my faith back in dentists.”

In the three patient records we looked at, we saw that medical issues that might impact on people's dental treatment were clearly recorded. People we spoke with told us they were told about treatment options and costs. One person said, “They explain and talk to you and ask about your cleaning routine and give you advice.”

We saw that the surgery was clean, equipment was stored safely and that staff followed the Department of Health guidance for infection prevention and control. A dental nurse showed how they cleaned, decontaminated and sterilised the equipment that was used.

In the four staff files we looked at, we saw records of the checks made on staff’s suitability for their role, and of their professional registration and training. We saw that the practice manager asked patients for feedback about their experiences at the surgery, and made regular checks on the cleanliness of the premises and the quality of patients’ and other records that were kept at the surgery.
