9th December 2013 - During a routine inspection pdf icon

During our visit we spoke with four people who used the service. We spoke with the staff in the surgery including the receptionist, the dental nurse, the dentist and the practice manager. We looked at people’s dental records and other records relating to the management of the business. We looked around the practice and observed high standards of cleanliness.

Three people we spoke with were satisfied with the service and told us they managed to get an appointment when they needed to, one person had come in as an emergency appointment. People told us they received information about treatment options and costs of treatment before any planned treatment went ahead. People told us they were given time to consider their options and then signed their agreement before treatment was carried out. We saw evidence that the practice were responsive to concerns raised.

People had enough information about their treatment options and the manager showed us the notes made following treatment which we confirmed with the dentist were made contemporaneously. Notes included dietary advice and how to maintain good oral health. Records showed patients were making informed choices about their treatment options and giving their consent before treatment started.

People received treatment in a clean environment which had effective systems in place to reduce the risk of infection.

There were systems in place to ensure staff were supported in their role through training, induction and informal support, but we identified a number of improvements the practice could make to ensure that staff were sufficiently supported.
