We looked at the treatment records of five patients, both adults and children. We saw that the records were available on computer and in paper files. We saw evidence of up to date medical histories, referral letters, orthodontic assessments, evidence of consent obtained, x-rays, treatment plans and written treatment updates for consultations performed.

We were told by the registered manager that a recruitment process, which was managed by a Human Resource Consultant, was in place to ensure that staff employed are suitable to work with vulnerable adults and children. We were told and saw records which confirmed that all of the Orthodontists had enhanced criminal records checks and all were registered with the relevant professional body, the General Dental Council.

We saw that the practice had a dedicated decontamination room for the decontamination and sterilisation of dental instruments. We saw evidence of a cross infection control policy and log book that was signed by staff after reading the policy. We saw posters on the wall describing first aid, basic life support, electric shock management along with the Health and Safety Policy, Fire policy, resuscitation procedure and an overview of the decontamination process.

We were told by the registered manager that the quality of care delivered by the professional orthodontic team across the three practices is continually assessed through a key performance indicators framework used to assess each associate. A score is allocated to each associate and any fluctuations in scores would be addressed by the registered manager.
