16th September 2013 - During an inspection to make sure that the improvements required had been made pdf icon

At our inspection on 21 May 2013 we identified concerns around patients not always being protected from the risk of infection because appropriate guidance had not been followed. This was in relation to some of the sinks and staff did not always follow the policy around not wearing their uniforms outside the practice. Clinical waste was stored in the clean area of the decontamination room and regular testing of the water supply for Legionella had not been undertaken. At this inspection we saw that these matters had been addressed. However, we found that not all the recommendations made following the testing for Legionella had been completed.

Patients we spoke with told us they were happy with the service they received from the practice. One patient told us “I am very happy with the dentist, [the dentist] has always been friendly and kind” and “[The dentist] is very calm and if you did have a fear [the dentist] would be a good one to visit”. Another patient told us “The reception staff seem organised and there are toys available for the kids.” Another patient told us they had found the staff “helpful and pleasant”.

We saw that there was information available to patients around the costs of treatment on display, the names of the dentists and products for sale promoting oral health care. We saw that patients were involved in making decisions around their treatment.

Staff knew what action to take in response to potential child and adult protection matters and how to report concerns related to the practice. There was written information available around these matters for staff to be able to reference.

We saw that there were systems in place to maintain the hygiene of the surgery and dental instruments used. However, we found patients were not always protected from the risk of infection because appropriate guidance had not been followed. This was in relation to some of the sinks and staff did not always follow the policy around not wearing their uniforms outside the practice. Clinical waste was stored in the clean area of the decontamination room and regular testing of the water supply for Legionella had not been undertaken.

There were systems in place to monitor service delivery at the practice.
