28th August 2013 - During a routine inspection pdf icon

The Tavistock Dental provides services to NHS and private patients. Five dentists work at the clinic, supported by three dental nurses, practice manager and a receptionist.

Patients told us that they found the practice clean, we were told that staff were friendly and that patients felt their treatment needs were met. They also told us that “the dentist offers advice on healthy diet” and that “staff wear face masks and gloves.” Patients were happy with the appointment times allocated and felt these were long enough.

We noted that patients’ needs were suitably assessed and treatment offered met their individual needs. Patients’ records were appropriately maintained and dentists provided patients with relevant information regarding their treatment. Patients were provided with information on fees and could choose between NHS and private treatment.

We found that patients were protected from risk of acquiring health care associated infection. The provider carried out regular infection control audits and staff completed the relevant training in infection control.

There was a sufficient number of staff, who were suitably qualified. However, the provider had not appointed a registered manager since June 2011. This meant that patients' care was not overseen by an appropriate person.

Patients told us that they felt confident to raise any concerns with the provider. The provider had an appropriate complaints policy.
