29th May 2014 - During a routine inspection pdf icon

During this inspection we spoke with seven patients. All of them told us they were treated well and comments included, “They are very good here and there is always enough information”. People told us that they could usually get appointments when they needed them.

We saw that patients were spoken to in a friendly but respectful manner. Patients told us that staff at this practice were caring and explained treatment choices to them.

Records showed that people's needs were assessed and care and treatment was planned and delivered in line with their individual treatment plan. All of the patients we spoke with told us that their dental needs had been met by appropriate treatments. This indicated that the care and treatment they had received had been effective.

We found that staff at the practice had knowledge of how to report and escalate concerns of abuse in relation to vulnerable adults or children. This is sometimes called safeguarding. We saw that since our last inspection in January 2012 the practice had improved their knowledge of how to support people who may be unable to make decisions about their care.

The practice appeared visibly clean and effective systems were in place in respect of prevention and control of infection. This supported delivery of safe treatment.

We found that the practice was well led. The service identified, reviewed and managed potential risks. Regular audits were completed and acted upon.

We met with seven people who use this service. They told us that the dentists were very helpful, told them about the different treatment options, gave them good information about prices, and the name of specialist dentists if they needed to be referred on. We saw that staff took trouble to find appointments at times that suited people. Two people told us that they had received support from the Chudleigh Practice dentists when encountering difficulties with services to which they had been referred.

One person said the dentists were, “Easy to speak to, caring and relaxed”. Another told us they were, “Good with children, and always explain the treatments.”
