14th May 2013 - During a routine inspection pdf icon

A patient we spoke with said, “I’ve been coming here since I was ten, I’m 77 now, it’s a great practice, things always get explained to us really well.” Another patient told us, “They always talk you through everything so you understand it.”

Care and treatment was planned to ensure people's safety and welfare. People's needs were assessed, their care and treatment was delivered in line with their individual treatment plan.

The patient treatment records that we saw recorded details about people’s oral health needs such as the condition their gums, oral health and allergies. We also found evidence that people’s choices were recorded in relation to the treatment options that had been offered.

There were effective systems in place to reduce the risk and spread of infection. A range of policies and procedures were in place concerning the prevention and control of infection. These included prevention of blood borne viruses, decontamination, environmental design and cleaning, hand hygiene and waste.

Personnel files contained evidence that staff had attended relevant training courses in relation to their role.

A dental nurse said, “We quality check between three and four people a day asking questions such as, did you understand the treatment? Were treatment options given? Did the clinician communicate clearly?”
