14th February 2014 - During a routine inspection pdf icon

We spoke with three managers, including the registered manager and laboratory manager. We spoke with two bio-medical scientists, called scientists in this report. We looked at a number of records to help us understand how the laboratory was run.

The laboratory did not have any contact with patients. However, we found evidence that there were arrangements to support safe patient care in place.

The laboratory investigations were carried out in a clean and hygienic environment and there were arrangements to protect staff from infection.

All the laboratory equipment was fit for purpose, regularly maintained and tested daily to ensure the reliability of results.

Staff were well supported to do their jobs and were appropriately trained. A scientist told us, “What I do in the laboratory I’ve been trained to do and I feel confident. If I don’t I can ask a senior person. I’ve had proper training.”

Comprehensive and accurate records were kept that supported safe care for patients.
